RedNote Removes 65,000 Gambling Posts in World Cup Crackdown
China-based social networking website Xiaohongshu, also called RedNote in international circles, has banned more than 65,000 gambling posts and blocked more than 40,000 user accounts in a move to crackdown on illegal promotion of sports betting services in association with the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Tighter Enforcement Begins
According to the platform, the clampdown followed the issuance of a notice during the beginning of June on illegal World Cup betting promotions. It is designed to curb gambling promotions, traffic redirection schemes, and other betting-related posts made during the tournament time.
Xiaohongshu stated that the World Cup is a major season when illegal gambling activity is highly organized online, with betting companies taking advantage of global tournaments to attract people via social websites. The platform said that starting from the first week of June, there have been over 12 campaigns against organized traffic diversion efforts.
These efforts have led to the suspension of over 40,000 connected accounts, as well as the deletion of over 65,000 gambling content postings, and more than 450,000 comments directing users towards such sites.
Cooperation With Authorities
Additionally, it is claimed that the company has shared information with relevant law enforcement agencies and provided intelligence on 12 occasions, helping investigations in the provinces of Guangxi, Beijing, and Zhejiang, resulting in actions against 5 traffic diversion organizations.

It is well known that the Chinese government has always maintained stringent gambling control policies, with online betting and other such prediction tools and services considered to be illegal activities. Social media platforms have increasingly come under scrutiny because of their role in directing users toward offshore gambling operators.
Account Penalties Explained
Xiaohongshu added that promoting illegal sports betting could result in various sanctions as per the regulations of the platform. This includes content deletion, restrictions on messaging services as well as group chats, and banning accounts permanently.
In addition, the firm also emphasized on the fact that users should view World Cup games in an appropriate manner while taking part in online discussions politely. They also encouraged users to report suspicious activities related to betting.
Regional Crackdown Underway
Such action is being taken amid a crackdown across several jurisdictions in Asia on illegal betting services tied to the World Cup. Regulatory bodies and enforcement agencies in several regions have stated that major sporting events continue to be used by offshore entities to reach local consumers via social media ads and influencer marketing campaigns.
