Where is Luis Suarez? Why Uruguay legend isn’t playing at World Cup
No player has scored more goals in a Uruguay uniform than Luis Suarez.
But as the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway, Suarez is nowhere to be found. He wasn’t named in the squad. He’s not playing in the tournament in North America.

Despite still being in solid form for Inter Miami, Suarez misses out.
He’s Uruguay’s record goal scorer, with 69 goals for his country.
He’s also second all-time in caps, with 143 appearances being second only to Diego Godin.

Where is Luis Suarez?
Suarez isn’t a part of the Uruguay squad at the 2026 World Cup, which is likely surprising to many soccer fans.
It’s not a total shock, though, as he hasn’t played for his country since 2024.
Suarez still plays in Major League Soccer for Inter Miami, and he still puts the ball in the back of the net there.

He just won’t be doing it for Uruguay.
It’s also worth noting that Uruguay doesn’t have Edinson Cavani, either.
Two of the greatest strikers of their generation played for the same nation, but neither is with the national team any longer.
The manager, Marcelo Bielsa, has clearly decided to move on to the next generation of attackers from Uruguay, at the expense of Suarez and Cavani.
