Cowboys’ revamped defense shouldn’t throw Shavon Revel to the wolves again
The Dallas Cowboys had one of the worst defenses, finishing with a franchise-worst 511 points allowed. Cornerback Shavon Revel Jr., who was a rookie last season, likely took the biggest lumps in that unit. Dallas must take the blame for that.

According to PFF data, Revel was rated last out of 114 qualifying cornerbacks in 2025, recording a 35.2 defensive grade and a 34.6 coverage grade.
Now, with a retooled coaching staff and a healthier roster, Dallas has a chance to avoid repeating last year’s mistake of rushing him before he was ready.
Cowboys selected him in the third round of the 2025 draft as a high-value pick. Since he suffered a torn ACL in college, the Cowboys knew he would need time to recover. However, a recovery setback in late July delayed his progress, and he did not make his debut until November 17 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The 25-year-old played 19 defensive snaps in his debut and saw his workload expand to 39 snaps against the Philadelphia Eagles the following week. He finished his rookie year appearing in seven games with five starts, recording 35 total tackles and three pass deflections.

It was quite a modest production for a player forced into a starting role without a training camp. He was actually forced into playing time too soon. Now, heading into year two, Revel says the difference is night and day.
«It’s very beneficial,» Revel said during the offseason via Tommy Yarrish from the official Cowboys’ website. «Just because I can clean up a lot of things, a lot of errors I didn’t see last year, or I did see last year, that I could clean up this year. … My knee is 100%, so now it’s time to focus on situational ball and I’ve got to see what I need to fix or get better at.»
New defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who has a history of developing cornerbacks like Patrick Surtain, Cooper DeJean, and Quinyon Mitchell, helped Revel regain his confidence and sharpen his skills.
He will compete with Cobie Durant for the starting spot opposite DaRon Bland. Unlike last year, the Cowboys finally have enough depth at cornerback to let Revel develop at his own pace instead of forcing him onto the field immediately.
