ANJL Survey Suggests Online Betting Has Minimal Impact on Lula’s Rejection Among Evangelicals
A recent survey sponsored by the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) has shown that online gambling does not significantly affect the opposition of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva among the evangelical electorate of Greater São Paulo.

According to the study prepared by Cruz Consulting, the issues related to betting amounted to merely 1 percent of the motives provided by those respondents, who stated that they will not vote for Lula in the case of the second round of presidential elections in 2026.
The survey was carried out in the period from March 24 to March 26, 2026. 1,159 persons took part in the process. The margin of error is estimated at 3%. The confidence level equals 95%.
ANJL said that its objective in organizing this study was to find the reasons for rejection of Lula in the evangelical society of Greater São Paulo, as well as to evaluate the role of the betting market in the voters’ perception.
Main Motives Relating to Presidential Elections
It can be seen from the results that betting is regarded as a minor issue affecting the presidential election, in which Lula will likely stand as the candidate for the fourth consecutive term against his competitors, including Flávio Bolsonaro, Romeu Zema, and Ronaldo Caiado.
“The debate about the importance of betting in this context is greatly exaggerated. There is a mistake in the interpretation of what political and electoral weight betting may have. The survey shows us that this issue is far behind more important matters. The figure of 1 percent suggests that the debate takes place on the grounds of political, economic, and cultural reasons“, claimed Plínio Lemos Jorge, the head of ANJL.
The results show that voters attach more importance to political rather than economic issues. Thus, 51% of the responses referred to politics, whereas only 41% were related to the economy.

Tax levels and government expenditure were determined as the most crucial economic issues, and their aggregate significance was assessed at 47 percentage points. As for politics, the problem of corruption appeared to be the most important, and it was pointed out by 34% of the respondents.
Current Perceptions of Betting by Evangelicals
This research also examined the perceptions of the evangelical electorate regarding the issue of betting. It turned out that 47% of the respondents claimed they were not able to separate the legalized gambling activity from the traditional types of betting, like jogo do bicho, a kind of lottery popular in the underground market in Brazil.
Thus, according to ANJL, the difficulty lies in the general inability of citizens to differentiate between the legal and illegal betting sector.
Furthermore, no more than 2% of the evangelicals in question were regular gamblers. This data, as the representatives of ANJL noted, confirms that betting is far from being an influential factor in determining voters’ attitudes to President Lula.
As an additional detail of this research, it should be mentioned that 9% of the responses related to the work of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The discussion of this topic became extremely intense earlier this year because of the accusations addressed to judges Alexandre de Moraes and José Antonio Dias Toffoli on account of alleged improper relations with Daniel Vorcaro, a person connected with the biggest corruption scandal in the history of modern Brazil.
