From Shaq, LeBron to Curry: All the records Victor Wembanyama broke in Spurs’ NBA Finals run
After just three years in the league, Victor Wembanyama has now solidified himself as one of the greatest big men in league history. It was expected that he would restart the San Antonio Spurs dynasty, but he is very early. The biggest indicator was his Game 7 triumph against the Oklahoma City Thunder. This insane talent of a man not only beat Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s squad, he also notched records only ever touched by Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O’Neal.

All the records Wembanyama broke in Spurs vs. Thunder in Game 7
Throughout a grueling seven-game series against the Thunder, Victor Wembanyama was able to score a total of 191 points while grabbing 19 blocks. Only two other people in league history have accumulated 175+ points and 15+ blocks in a Conference Finals series, per StatMuse. Those two people are also insanely great in their own right because they are Shaquille O’Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon, per StatMuse.
More than following the footsteps of legends like Shaq and Olajuwon, Wembanyama was also paving his own path to greatness. With the unfortunate consequence of the Thunder being sent home, the Spurs superstar became the first player in league history to have recorded 15+ three-pointers and 15+ blocks per game. This was a testament to how versatile he is as a player. Coach Mitch Johnson was able to place him on the perimeter or in the paint with actions that effectively disrupted the Thunder defense.

As a star player, Wembanyama also uplifts his teammates. The thought that the Spurs are ‘way ahead of schedule’ proved to be true throughout this postseason, but their leadership and adaptability were the reasons why they triumphed over the Thunder. With this, the Spurs, who have a weighted age average of 25 years and 20 days old, have become the second-youngest team in league history to have reached the NBA Finals. The Spurs only trail the 1976-77 Portland Trail Blazers, who had an average age of just 24 years old. Coincidentally, it was also a legendary young big man, Bill Walton, who paved the way for that squad’s success.
To no one’s surprise, Wembanyama was also named the Western Conference Finals MVP when the Spurs battered the Thunder in Game 7. So far, only four other players have won the award: Stephen Curry in 2022, Nikola Jokic in 2023, Luka Doncic in 2024, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in 2025. When all of those ages are lined up, Wembanyama becomes the youngest Western Conference Finals MVP ever.

Prior to Game 7, Wembanyama was already breaking records to win against the Thunder. His 12 blocks against the Minnesota Timberwolves were the most by any player in playoff history. He is also just the third player in postseason history to have recorded a triple-double using blocks. The Spurs legend joins greats like Olajuwon and Andrew Bynum as the only players to have notched this feat.

To top all of this off, he joins an insanely exclusive three-person club in league history. See, Wembanyama is just the third player ever to have made the All-NBA first team and reach the NBA Finals by the age of 22 years old. LeBron James was the last person to have done this in 2007. Prior to him, this record stood for 59 years, as Max Zaslofsky was the first person to ever do it back in 1948.
Make no mistake, the job is far from over. As everyone knows, aliens attack New York first before they rule for a lengthy period of time. Can this historically anomalous player finish the job and win his first of many Larry O’Brien trophies?
