Former LSU star calls out Texas in explosive Steve Sarkisian CFP controversy – here’s why
The rivalry between Steve Sarkisian and Texas Tech escalated quickly following controversial offseason remarks about the College Football Playoff selection process and how strength of schedule is evaluated. While breaking down how the CFP committee assesses resumes, Sarkisian seemed to take a swipe at Texas Tech and the wider Big 12, contrasting their schedules with that of Texas.

Texas Tech supporter and billionaire Cody Campbell openly called out Texas on social media following the jab. He also urged the Longhorns to back up their confidence by scheduling a matchup if they truly believed their reserves could outperform the Red Raiders’ starters.
Even former LSU standout Bobby Joseph Hebert III, known as T-Bob Herbert, also criticized Sarkisian, accusing Texas of avoiding the challenge.
“If Texas doesn’t make an honest effort to play Texas Tech in week 1 they are bi*ch made. You can’t say you would win the Big 12 with your twos and threes and then refuse the challenge of a school who doesn’t even have their multi million dollar star quarterback,” Herbert tweeted.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire then escalated the discussion further by proposing to cancel upcoming games against Texas State and Abilene Christian in order to open the schedule for a Week 1 showdown with Texas. Campbell even offered to cover the buyout costs for both matchups, which total about $2.4 million, according to FBSchedules, to make the game happen.
McGuire’s squad faced three ranked opponents during their 2025 Big 12 championship run, including two matchups against BYU. Meanwhile, Texas played five ranked teams in the regular season and finished 3-2 in those games.
