That figure marks a jump from KSh24bn recorded in the 2022/23 financial year. The announcement came during the iGaming AFRIKA Summit in Nairobi, where regulators and operators gathered to discuss taxation, compliance, and responsible play.
AGOK highlighted comments from J.W. Otieno, chief manager at the Kenya Revenue Authority, who said the increase reflected both stronger compliance by operators and more customer activity.
The association also pointed out that gambling taxes are now helping fund public services, including health, education, and infrastructure, while easing pressure on the wider tax base. “There is clear evidence on the year-on-year rise in total taxes collected from the industry from Ksh24bn in financial year 2022/2023 to Ksh32bn as at end April 2026…and counting!,” Otieno stated.
Kenya increasingly becoming a key regulatory and commercial hub
Kenya is positioning itself as a central player in Africa’s gaming industry, with regulators signaling a shift toward policies that balance growth with consumer protection.
At the iGaming AFRIKA Summit, AGOK quoted Kenya Revenue Authority’s J.W. Otieno as saying the agency is considering “a reduced excise duty rate for operators that implement credible player safety initiatives.” He added, “The KRA is not interested in taxing the industry out of existence but rather leveraging on technology to revive and transform Africa’s gaming industry, aiming for shared prosperity.”
AGOK noted that gambling tax revenues are already supporting public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, while easing the overall tax burden on citizens.
Discussions at the summit focused on how taxation, regulation, and responsible gambling can be aligned to create sustainable frameworks across African markets. The association emphasized that Kenya’s collaborative approach encourages compliance and innovation rather than punitive measures.
