Ben Ikin has sensationally resigned as CEO of the Queensland Rugby League in a major shock for the code just weeks out from the opening State of Origin clash.

Ikin informed QRL chairman Brian Canavan of his decision within the past 48 hours, with the governing body confirming he will remain in the role until the end of July before officially departing.
The resignation comes less than three years after Ikin took over the position in May 2023, having left the Brisbane Broncos to become chief executive of rugby league in Queensland.
Widely regarded as one of rugby league’s sharpest administrators and media minds, Ikin oversaw a significant growth period for the game in Queensland during his tenure, including a reported increase in player registrations over the past year.

QRL chairman Brian Canavan admitted the organisation had been caught off guard by the decision, describing the departure as a shock and praising Ikin for leaving the organisation in a strong position moving forward.
Reports have indicated there had been some disagreements behind the scenes regarding governance and strategic matters, although Canavan publicly denied there was any bad blood surrounding the exit.

The timing of the departure is significant given Queensland are preparing for another State of Origin campaign under coach Billy Slater, who is also off contract at the end of the 2026 series.
Speculation had linked Ikin to a possible role with the incoming Perth Bears due to his history with the old North Sydney Bears, however reports suggest he is instead set to move away from rugby league entirely and into a technology-based business role within the property sector.
Before transitioning into administration, Ikin enjoyed a decorated playing career that included 17 State of Origin appearances for Queensland, premiership success with the Brisbane Broncos and representing Australia at international level.
Before moving into rugby league administration, he was also a prominent media figure for Fox Sports, in particular heading up the long-running NRL 360 program before being replaced by Braith Anasta.
While many would expect Ikin to either explore club opportunities or return to broadcasting, where he was widely regarded as one of the strongest voices in the game, it appears he will be lost to rugby league……..at least for now.
