Homophobic slur investigation to rock AFL once again with Brisbane Lions talent in the gun

An AFL investigation has been started into an alleged homophobic slur made by Brisbane Lions youngster Koby Evans.

The 18-year-old allegedly made the comment to a Coburg player during the Lions’ VFL match on Saturday — less than two weeks after the AFL dealt out a four-match ban (two suspended) to St Kilda’s Lance Collard.

During the match, Evans apologised for his actions and also expressed his remorse after the game, according to 7NEWS.

The AFL is now investigating the incident after both clubs held talks about the controversy in the aftermath.

It’s understood the AFL uses a five-match suspension as a starting point, but the ban can fluctuate due to several factors, including gravity of the offence and player remorse.

Evans is yet to make his debut for the Brisbane Lions senior team, but has played five VFL matches after being selected with pick 38 in last year’s AFL draft.

Collard returned to St Kilda’s VFL side on the weekend after serving his suspension, that was initially handed down as nine weeks (two suspended).
