Wickenden – a Quarter Finalist early in the Challenge Tour season – reached the final of Event 13 firstly by recording victories against Tim Baker, Rowby-John Rodriguez, Scott Campbell, Marcel Walpen, Derek Coulson, Liam Maendl-Lawrance and Patrick Tringler, to set up a clash with compatriot, David Evans.

The final began with four straight holds of throw between the pair, before the first break came from Evans in Leg Five with a 15 darter to move 3-2 ahead in a race to five. Wickenden then hit back immediately with a 20-dart break to square the tie up at 3apiece before hitting back-to-back 15 darters to seal a 5-3 victory and a clinch a maiden PDC title as well as collecting the £3,000 top prize.

In Event 14, table topper Joe Hunt was victorious as he reached the final firstly by recording victories against Paul Kalashnikov, Jannis Barkhausen, Robin Beger, Michael Unterbuchner, Harry Ward, Jamai Van den Herik and Derek Coulson, to set up a clash with compatriot, Tommy Morris.

The final began with Hunt racing into a 2-0 lead with winning legs coming in 14 and 20 darts respectively before Morris hit back by winning successive legs of his own to square the tie up at 2apiece. Hunt then won back-to-back legs again to move within one of victory, this time in 13 and 16 darts. Morris did pull one leg back before Hunt sealed the victory in Leg Eight with an 11-darter to pick up a third Challenge Tour title of the year and extend his lead at the top of the leaderboard after 14 events played.

The PDC Winmau Challenge Tour weekend concluded on Sunday with Event 15 taking place in Hildesheim.

Daniel Ayres took the honours, defeating the vastly experienced Northern Ireland man, Kevin Burness in a high-quality and fitting finale to the weekend’s darts action.

So far in this campaign, Cheshire chucker Ayres had been eliminated at the quarter-final stage, so it must have felt good to firstly hurdle that obstacle and then clear a couple more to finally pick up a maiden PDC title, just over a decade since first competing on the Challenge Tour circuit.
