Lula Announces Betting Restrictions for Participants of Debt Relief Program
President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has made another announcement regarding the upcoming new program “Desenrola Brasil.” In particular, he explained that those who apply for the new debt renegotiation program should expect to receive a one-year ban on access to betting sites.

This statement was made by Lula during his nationally televised speech on April 30, which marked Labor Day in the country.
The updated program aimed to help citizens resolve issues related to debts will go live in the nearest days. As previously mentioned, the main requirement for applicants to be included in this list will include a ban on using licensed betting sites for one year.
The leader noted that it was not the government that brought betting firms to the local market. At the same time, it would try to stop the process of destruction that they cause.
Policy as an Attempt to Safeguard Consumers
The decision can be seen as an additional step made to address the issue of vulnerability and reduce the number of risks for consumers in financial terms. Thus, the program will enable debtors to negotiate their obligations.
According to Lula, Desenrola Brasil can help people manage credit card debts, overdrafts, and other types of high-interest debts that usually require immediate attention.
At the same time, the project offers to provide funds from the FGTS (Severance Indemnity Fund) that will be used to facilitate repayments. The restriction on betting should prevent borrowers from getting deeper into the cycle of financial risks while attempting to restore stability.
Possible Drawbacks of the Restriction
Even though the restriction may seem like the right move to protect users’ interests, there are some potential drawbacks that should not be overlooked. Specifically, the ban does not affect unregulated betting sites that will continue operating without any problems.

This means that participants in the program may simply switch to these services and continue facing financial risks. It goes without saying that this tendency will do more harm than good since such sites cannot guarantee the safety of users.
At the same time, these platforms lack a series of protective features and mechanisms that regulate the behavior of betting sites within the country.
Betting Sector Keeps Growing
One can mention that the government’s attempts to regulate the local betting industry did not go unnoticed. Specifically, the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service recently revealed the results of the first three months of the current year in terms of tax collection from the regulated sector.
In particular, during the first quarter of 2023, the sector produced approximately R$3.4 billion worth of taxes, 123.7% more compared to the previous year.
The rapid growth of revenue is caused by the introduction of new legislative initiatives that enabled betting companies to operate legally. This also helped the government better control the sector, increasing its economic value significantly.
Taxed money will be used to support security services, tourism, sports, and other important public spheres.
