In August 2026, Sweden Will Set Stronger Spelpaus Verification Regulations
Licensed gambling providers will be subject to more strict laws about how they verify players against Spelpaus as part of Sweden’s efforts to strengthen the technical safety behind its national self-exclusion system from 1 August 2026. The change aligns with Spelinspektionen’s increased attention on responsible gaming regulations, such as managing high deposit limits and setting a stronger credit prohibition under the Gaming Act.

Sweden applies self-exclusion verification technical regulations
When checking the national self-exclusion register, Spelpaus.se, registered operators must use official credentials and a designated application programming interface, according to Sweden’s gaming regulator. The new rule, which goes into effect on August 1, 2026, specifies how license holders are required to confirm whether a player stayed away from gambling.
The regulation was implemented by Spelinspektionen, the Swedish Gambling Authority, as a component of a larger set of regulations related to responsible gaming. In addition to the new Spelpaus regulations, legislators have authorised a larger credit prohibition under the Gambling Act, and the regulator has begun an investigation into how operators handle clients with large deposit limits.
The new rule requires operators to access Spelpaus.se using the special login credentials provided by Spelinspektionen. Additionally, they must perform the check via the regulator’s approved API, a technical link that enables operators to directly query the self-exclusion register.
Once a check verifies whether or not a person is self-excluded from gambling, it is considered completed. Sweden’s national system, Spelpaus, enables anyone to restrict themselves from gaming services that are authorised.
Supervisory assessment of deposit limits
Spelinspektionen began a supervisory investigation into how licensed gaming operators handle players who set large monthly deposit limits earlier this week. Customers can regulate the amount of money they can add to their gambling accounts over a predetermined period of time by using deposit limitations.
CoinToss, Kaprifol, Mr. Green, and Mr. Vegas are all included in the report. It focuses on following the regulations that mandate operators’ duty of care requirements to get in touch with players whose monthly deposit limit is above SEK10,000, or roughly $1,080. The Swedish Parliament has authorised an expanded credit prohibition under the Gambling Act, independent of the Spelpaus modifications. On May 1, 2026, that measure will go into force.
Long-term damage information
Adult gambling-related harm has decreased since the early 2000s, according to a recent study by economist Ola Nevander that was presented by the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling (BOS). Data from national surveys and studies spanning more than 20 years are used in the report. The study discovered that the rate decreased from 2.2% in 2008/2009 to 1.3% in 2021 using the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). The results were collected regardless of the gambling industry’s expansion within the same time frame.
