Joel Embiid contract, explained: Why massive extension for 76ers star could make potential trade that much harder

Across his 11-year career, Joel Embiid has become the highest-paid Philadelphia 76er in franchise history. He has earned more than $320 million and has served as the franchise’s focal point for years.

In September 2024, Embiid waived his player option to sign a massive three-year, $192.9 million fully guaranteed extension with the team that drafted him. The 2022 MVP has remained loyal to Philadelphia and is expected to stay until his contract expires after the 2028-29 season.

He ranks 17th in career earnings in NBA history, and when he’s on the court, he shows why he has amassed so much. Embiid has a lengthy injury history and has frequently been subjected to load management, which has limited his chances at NBA awards, but he remains one of the league’s top-caliber players.

Here’s the rundown on the Philly star’s massive contract and what it means for both him and the Sixers.

Joel Embiid contract

In September 2024, Embiid signed a three-year, $192.9 million fully-guaranteed extension with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN. His latest contract was signed as a maximum veteran extension.

During the 2025-26 season, Embiid had the fourth-highest annual average value in the NBA at more than $62.5 million. He is roughly a measly $150,000 behind Boston Celtics centerpiece Jayson Tatum, who makes $62.7 million per year.

Embiid’s deal includes a player option in the final year of his contract in 2028-29, meaning he can choose whether to remain with the Sixers or leave the franchise.

The 32-year-old’s prior contract was a four-year, $213,280,928 fully guaranteed deal signed ahead of the 2023 season. Embiid is represented by Leon Rose, now the president of the New York Knicks, who has also represented LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson.

His massive contract and injury history may make teams more hesitant to trade for the star. Embiid has already stopped playing back-to-back games because of injury concerns, and Philadelphia may be his only suitor for the remainder of his career.
