Selwyn Cobbo extends with Dolphins, but only for 12 months, PNG Chiefs next?

Even before he joined the Dolphins ahead of the 2026 NRL season there were rumours Selwyn Cobbo may not be staying long.

There was mail he could rejoin the Brisbane Broncos as soon as 2027, or head west to link with Mal Meninga and the Perth Bears.

Well, those rumours have now been firmly put to bed with confirmation the 23-year-old rep star has re-committed to the Dolphins and will be staying put in Redcliffe until at least the end of the 2027 NRL season.

After a difficult 2025 with Brisbane under new coach Michael Maguire, a rejuvenated Cobbo has been a regular in the Dolphins backline so far in 2026, scoring two tries and featuring in all six matches.

“Selwyn has already made his presence felt at the Dolphins — both on the field and off it,” Dolphins boss Terry Reader said in announcing news of Cobbo’s extension.

“We believe this contract extension is just the start of what will be a long career for Selwyn in the Dolphins’ jersey.”

How long that career ends up being remains to be seen however, given Cobbo’s new deal is for just 12 months, meaning he will once again be free to negotiate with NRL rivals from November 1.

Critically, that keeps him in play to potentially sign a lucrative deal with the PNG Chiefs for their debut NRL season in 2028.
