Gaming Taxes for Macau Reached a Total of MOP42.52 Billion in Five Months
According to figures published recently by the Financial Services Bureau in Macau, total gaming taxes collected from January until May have reached MOP42.52 billion, which is equivalent to $5.27 billion. Just within the month of May, gaming taxes collected have amounted to more than MOP7.65 billion or $1.12 billion, underscoring the scale of the sector’s contribution to government income.

May Collections Ease From April
Compared to April, when revenue stood at MOP9.07 billion, the figure fell by 15.7% in May, the official figures from the Bureau reveal. Nevertheless, despite the fall recorded during the month, it should be pointed out that the cumulative year-to-date revenue still significantly exceeded the amount seen in the previous year.
As shown by statistics, over January–May, gaming revenue reached the level of MOP42.52 billion, marking an annual increase of 21.9%. As seen from these figures, the share of gaming taxation was crucial in building the municipal budget in the beginning of the year.
Gaming Taxes Dominate Current Revenue
Under Macau’s 10-year gaming concession system, which began on January 1, 2023, the effective tax rate on casino gross gaming revenue is 40%. The latest figures show gaming taxes made up nearly 87.5% of the Macau government’s MOP48.62 billion in current revenue recorded through May 31.
That share highlights how closely public finances in Macau remain tied to gaming activity. The bureau’s data shows that casino tax receipts continue to represent the main source of ongoing government income, even as monthly collections can fluctuate from period to period.
Tax Figures And GGR Not Directly Comparable
The government also noted that gaming tax figures for a given calendar period are not directly comparable with casino gross gaming revenue for the same period. One reason is that there is usually a delay between the point at which gross gaming revenue is recorded by casino operators and the point at which the government registers the corresponding tax payment.
That timing difference means the tax take does not always move in lockstep with monthly GGR. The figures are still useful for measuring the fiscal importance of gaming, but they need to be read with that lag in mind.
Full-Year Target In View
Macau’s government expects to collect nearly MOP92.53 billion in gaming taxes this year. The amount collected in the first 5 months already represented nearly 46.0% of that forecast, giving the city close to half of its annual target before the year was halfway through.
The latest figures show that gaming remains the backbone of Macau’s public revenue structure. While monthly tax intake can vary, the year-to-date result points to a strong contribution from the sector as the government moves through 2026.
